Indefinite Proper Names and Quantification over Manifestations
نویسنده
چکیده
Starting from the observation that in German proper names can be determined by the indefinite article without apparently shedding their original referent, this paper presents a range of “nonstandard” uses of proper names, among them one we will call the “manifestation use”. It will be suggested that certain occurrences of proper names cannot be adequately analysed without assuming manifestations as a basic unit of quantification.

Probabilistic Quantifier Logic for General Intelligence: An Indefinite Probabilities Approach
Indefinite probabilities are a novel technique for quantifying uncertainty, which were created as part of the PLN (Probabilistic Logic Networks) logical inference engine, which is a key component of the Novamente Cognition Engine (NCE), an integrative AGI system. Previous papers have discussed the use of indefinite probabilities in the context of a variety of logical inference rules, but have o...
متن کاملNon existence of totally contact umbilical slant lightlike submanifolds of indefinite Sasakian manifolds
We prove that there do not exist totally contact umbilical proper slant lightlike submanifolds of indefinite Sasakian manifolds other than totally contact geodesic proper slant lightlike submanifolds. We also prove that there do not exist totally contact umbilical proper slant lightlike submanifolds of indefinite Sasakian space forms.
متن کاملSemantic vs. pragmatic definites: Evidence for presupposition cost from sentence processing
There is an ongoing debate about the meaning of definiteness and the number and types of definite entities (e.g. Russell, 1905; Strawson, 1950; Hawkins, 1978; Löbner, 1985; and many others). Definite noun phrases (NPs) include definite descriptions, demonstratives, pronouns, possessive constructions, proper names, or NPs with a universal quantifier as determiner, and research has focused on whi...
متن کاملSupport for Individual Concepts
This paper aims to provide support for the view that individual concepts are basic to natural language semantics. First, the use of constant individual concepts allows us to maintain Kripke’s view of proper names as nondescriptional rigid designators in the face of problems created by so-called “empty names.” And second, the distinction between constant and variable individual concepts can func...
متن کاملRelatively Unrestricted Quantification
There are four broad grounds upon which the intelligibility of quantification over absolutely everything has been questioned—one based upon the existence of semantic indeterminacy, another on the relativity of ontology to a conceptual scheme, a third upon the necessity of sortal restriction, and the last upon the possibility of indefinite extendibility. The argument from semantic indeterminacy ...
